Modern Foreign Languages HUB scheme

Dear Parent/Carer,

The languages department are delighted to inform you that we have been successful in obtaining ‘Hub School’ status as part of a new Modern Foreign Languages HUB scheme established by the Department for Education. As such the languages department is one of only forty five schools across the country who will be taking a lead on developing and improving languages teaching during this two year project. This is a very exciting opportunity for us to be a part of such an innovative project and to give our pupils access to the most recent pedagogy and teaching methods with regards to language learning.

In regards to your child’s language lessons and what this means for your child there will be few significant changes. They will still continue to attend their lessons as normal and will continue to have the same amount of curriculum time devoted to languages as previously. Some of the content and teaching approaches used during lesson time will of course be different as teachers introduce new pedagogical approaches in line with recommendations from the most up to date research into language teaching.

In order to oversee and implement the HUB scheme the Department for Education have created a ‘National Centre for Excellence in Modern Foreign Language Pedagogy’ (NCELP) at the University of York. This Centre is made up of researchers and experts in modern foreign language teaching. This centre will oversee the implementation of the teaching methodology and analyse its effectiveness. In order for the NCELP to carry out this work it will be necessary for students in each of the HUB schools to complete a set of surveys regarding their language learning. The NCELP will also collect data on your child as detailed on the Information Page.

The information will be treated confidentially and shared on a need-to-know basis only. Details of how this will be controlled are also on the attached sheet.

If you do not wish your child’s data to be shared or for your child to complete the surveys regarding their language learning experience please complete the reply slip and return it to Student Services.

Kind regards

Miss Carney
