Maths

“Mathematics is essential for everyday life and understanding our world. It is also essential to science, technology and engineering, and the advances in these fields on which our economic future depends. It is therefore fundamentally important to ensure that all pupils have the best possible mathematics education.”

Mathematics: Made to Measure Ofsted Subject Report 2012

At Patcham High School, we strive to provide students with the best possible mathematics.  Our mission statement is: “Teachers in the Maths department are here to support all students in making at least four levels of progress within a safe and positive learning environment.”  We focus on progress not perfection.

The curriculum we follow is based on teaching key concepts within number, algebra, shape and measure, and data handling.  Topics are taught over a series of lessons to help pupils master each mathematical skill or concept. Throughout the curriculum students are taught to reason mathematically, and solve problems using the skills they have acquired.

KS3

KS3 is grouped into sets 1-4 on each band (A or B). During years 7 and 8 pupils will work through the KS3 scheme of work (see below). The majority of topics are only covered once to ensure pupils have a good mathematical understanding and have mastered each topic. Pupils will take three in-class exams throughout the year to assess their progress. This will be reported to parents.  During KS3 pupils will be set weekly mymaths tasks for homework.

KS4

KS4 is grouped into sets 1-4 on each band (A or B). During years 9 and 10 pupils will work through the GCSE scheme of work (see below). Pupils will then revise all topics in year 11. Pupils in years 9 and 10 will take three in-class exams throughout the year, year 11 will sit two mock papers in exam conditions. The pupils’ progress and predicted GCSE grade will be reported to parents.  Pupuls in KS4 will be set weekly homework via mymaths, method maths or paper based revision sheets.

This year’s year 11 cohort will be writing the Edexcel exam – IMA1 – Mathematics (9-1). Pupils will either be entered to sit the higher or the foundation papers. Each course is assessed by three exams all pupils take at the end of year 11. For further information about this course, please visit the Edexcel website here: http://qualifications.pearson.com/en/qualifications/edexcel-gcses/mathematics-2015.html
