Vocational Studies

  • Year 10 – College day for students is Friday
  • Year 11 – College day for students is Tuesday

These days are option days so students do not miss any core subjects at school. The courses run over two years and the day will remain the same for both years.

The College day for most courses is split into half day practical and half day theory. The courses require a portfolio of evidence which is put together during theory classes. There are also exams and assessments which are completed throughout the year.

City College Courses for 14 to 16 years.

  • Construction Level 1
  • Hairdressing Level 1

Plumpton College Courses for 14 to 16 years.

  • Small Animal Management Level 1 or level 2
  • Horse Management Level 1 or Level 2
  • Motor Vehicle Maintenance Level 1
  • Metalwork Level 1

All of the above subjects lead to either a City & Guilds or BTEC qualification. Level 1 is comparable to 2 GCSE’s grade D – G and Level 2 is comparable to 2 GCSE’s grade A* – C.

All of the courses above lead on to further vocational qualifications at post 16 providers. Students already attending College will be fast tracked for Post 16 courses. You can go on to a full time course at College at 16 years or you may choose to do an apprenticeship through the College.

The Colleges offer these courses but that does not mean they will all run. We cannot guarantee places on the courses, it is dependent on the number of students who apply.

The courses are paid for by the school. As part of the course fee City College will provide uniforms and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as overalls and steel toe cap boots. All uniforms and PPE must be worn at college every week. If a student does not have their uniform or PPE then they will be sent home on Health & Safety grounds.

Plumpton College will inform you of their clothing and footwear requirements and where to order these from. We would suggest waterproofs and wellingtons.

Plumpton College provide a bus service that runs through Brighton between 7.00 am and 7.30 am. They have a transport handbook that they will send to you so you can see where the bus stops are. There is a charge for this service.

City College have two sites one at Pelham Street near London Road and also at Wilsons Avenue known as City College East. The college runs a shuttle bus service between the two sites. Students are expected to make their own way to college each week. The start time at City College is 9.00am. Most courses finish at 2.30pm or 3.00pm.

All students are visited regularly by myself (Ms Ottaway) who liaises with staff at college and school. I am the first point of contact for any queries or concerns you may have about college.

My direct number is 01273 543494 (I work Tuesday/Wednesday/Friday)

If a student is ill or unable to attend college then you should notify college and school first thing in the morning.
