Brighton and South Coast

The Brighton and South Coast network of Classics for All is based at Patcham High School, a non-selective comprehensive school on the outskirts of Brighton. It is backed by the School of Education at the University of Sussex.

The aim of the Brighton and South Coast Hub is to work closely with schools (primary, secondary and tertiary) to develop their provision of classical subjects, particularly in schools that have had no previous experience. Our main focus is to establish and then support Latin to GCSE in state schools in the Brighton and South Coast area – particularly Brighton & Hove.

The Brighton and South Coast Hub’s overall achievements to date are:

  • Setting up Latin provision to GCSE in four Brighton & Hove state-maintained secondary schools and one Sixth Form College.
  • Providing ongoing support to schools in the Brighton and South Coast area who have set up Latin to GCSE and schools providing other classical subjects – Ancient History, Classical Civilisation and Classical Greek.
  • Developing a solid network of schools and Classics teachers (in both the state and independent sector) who can offer their expertise and support in Classical Subjects.
  • Establishing a close relationship to the newly created Latin and Classics PGCE at the University of Sussex enabling trainee teachers (95 trainees so far – 2013-2022) to teach classical subjects in schools in the South East.
