English and Media
Our curriculum provides the space for all our students to develop their reading, writing and speaking skills, which will continue to serve them in a life after school.
We have shaped an ambitious and inclusive curriculum that aims to present opportunities for students to engage with the world around them, build confidence and discover who they are. We do this by creating a curriculum built on three strands: knowledge, skills and metacognition.
Our classrooms are places with vocabulary, spoken language and a love of a stories at the heart of them, where students are challenged through the texts they are exposed to, how they are asked to think and the extended writing they produce.
As a team of English teachers, we model being persistently reflective to lead the way for positive change in education; we are passionate about using literature as a tool to dismantle inequality.

Why our students love English…
“Class discussions make me confident.”
“I like creative writing because it allows you to let your mind fill the page with unique ideas as I express myself through my writing.“
“You can let your imagination run free.”
“Given the opportunity to express opinions without judgement as I am able to debate subjects I wasn’t aware of beforehand.”
“ I fell in love with words again”
Media GCSE Information
Our aim is to empower students to become critical, informed, and engaged citizens who can effectively analyse and create media in a rapidly evolving world.
The curriculum allows students to build a rich knowledge of the creative industries, embedding cross-curricular ideology and skills through analytical and creative contexts. Students develop their understanding of how Media is created, influenced and consumed in a broad range of industries and texts. Students develop the skills to critically analyse the Media, whilst also applying theoretical knowledge to create their own products.
In key stage 4 students are introduced to the key media frameworks through different creative industries. Concepts are introduced and applied to set texts to develop their wider knowledge of the Media and understanding of how the frameworks are interlinked. The knowledge, skills and texts are revisited across our curriculum so that students are deepening their understanding and applying their skills to a variety of texts. Practical skills are also introduced and embedded throughout our curriculum, so that students are developing their creative and critical thinking. This also allows students to develop digital editing and design skills in practice for their NEA. All media frameworks are studied individually in year 10 and then revisited by cross-media case studies in the second year of study.
